Tytus Fellowships and Cincinnati Summer Residencies

The University of Cincinnati Classics Department is pleased to offer two types of fellowships for study and research in the fields of philology, history, or archaeology at the John Miller Burnam Classics Library: Tytus Fellowships during the academic year, and Cincinnati Summer Residencies from May to August.

Senior scholars are invited to apply for the Margo Tytus Visiting Scholars Program. Applicants for this program will ordinarily be a minimum of five years beyond receipt of the Ph.D., with notable publication histories. Tytus Scholars are expected to be in residence at the University of Cincinnati for a minimum of one semester (ca. four months) and a maximum of two during the regular academic year; see UC Academic Calendar. In exceptional circumstances, Tytus Scholars may be appointed for a shorter term (one to two months) during the regular academic year. Tytus Scholars. will receive a monthly stipend of $1,500 plus housing near campus and a transportation allowance, as well as office space attached to the Burnam Classics Library.

More recent PhDs and other scholars who would benefit from the use of a world-class classics library are invited to apply for the Cincinnati Summer Residency program. Applicants for this program will have their Ph.D. in hand by the time of application, and will ordinarily be in residence at the University of Cincinnati for approximately two months in the summer terms, May to mid-August; see UC Academic Calendar. Cincinnati Summer Residents will receive housing near campus and office space attached to the Burnam Classics Library. Residents are not eligible for a stipend or travel reimbursement.

Apart from residence in Cincinnati for the term of the relevant fellowship, the only obligation of participants in either program is to pursue their own research. They will also have access to the Klau Library at neigboring Hebrew Union College. Preference will be given to those who demonstrate a need for resources peculiar to the Burnam Classics Library or Department of Classics archives, and have not previously been able to access them. For Cincinnati Summer Residents, special consideration will be given to scholars without access to a research library through their home institutions.

The deadline for both fellowships is February 1.

The University of Cincinnati Burnam Classics Library is one of the world's premier collections in the field of Classical Studies. Comprising 269,000 volumes and a wide range of electronic resources, the library covers all aspects of the Classics: languages and literatures, history, civilization, art, and archaeology. Of special value for scholars is both the richness of the collection and its accessibility; almost any avenue of research in the classics or the post-classical Greek world can be pursued deeply and broadly under a single roof. The unusually comprehensive core collection, maintained by professional classicist librarians, is augmented by several special collections, including 15,000 nineteenth century German Programmschriften, plus extensive holdings in Palaeography, Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies. At neighboring Hebrew Union College is the Klau Library, with holdings in excess of 445,000 volumes, rich in Judaica and Near Eastern Studies.

TWO EARLY-STAGE RESEARCH FELLOWSHIPS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF BOLOGNA

This week´s entry contains two announcements. Firstly, we would like to make you aware of an offer to young foreign researchers by the University of Bologna: The Institute for Advanced Studies has initiated the selection procedure for the assignment of two annual scholarships (EARLY STAGE Research Fellowships) for the year 2016.

for the assignment of two annual scholarships for young foreign researchers (EARLY-STAGE Research Fellowships) for the year 2016

Submission of application: From April 15 to May 30, 2015 (Deadline 11.55 pm May 30, 2015)

Art.1 - In accordance with its institutional aims, the ISA - Istituto di Studi Avanzati - intends to allocate two annual scholarships for young foreign researchers (Early-Stage Research Fellowships) for the year 2016.

Art.2 - Each Fellowship will be awarded to an early-career researcher in order to support the research activities of the University of Bologna and promote their international value.

Art.3 - The conditions of the Early-Stage Research Fellowship (ESRF) are as follows:

1. The candidate must receive an invitation from a Professor or Researcher at the University of Bologna, who will act as supervisor and will provide access to research facilities.

2. Each Fellow will receive an annual grant and will carry out his/her activity from January to December 2016.

3. The annual scholarship granted to a Fellow will amount to € 15,600 gross, i.e. before tax and social security contributions, which are to be paid by the recipient and the institution. The grant will be paid in installments every two months. The ESR Fellowship grant is exclusive and cannot be utilised in conjunction with or running parallel to other grants or contracts provided by the Italian government or other public bodies in Italy.

4. ISA offers to Fellows:

• a studio-apartment in the Residence Terzo Millennio (http://bologna.rtmliving.com), via Miliani 7/2, Bologna. The residence is in the Borgo Panigale district, well-connected by public transport to the city center and to the University area (NOTE - the residence does not host minors);

• a common room equipped for study and reading located at Palazzo Paleotti, via Zamboni 25, which is in the heart of the University area.

5. Candidates:

• can be citizens of any nation except Italy and must not be resident in Italy;

• must be 36 years of age or younger at the expiration date of this announcement;

• must be in possession of a PhD degree or equivalent qualification certified by a university and achieved before the present deadline of the 30th May 2015.

6. The selection procedure will be based on publications, educational and professional qualifications and certificates of merit as well as the scientific project that the candidate proposes to carry out at the University of Bologna. Applications will be assessed by the Council of Resident Fellows of the Istituto di Studi Avanzati - external references may be requested.

7. Applications must be uploaded no later than May 30, 2015 at the following link: (https://personale.unibo.it), clicking the “Register” tab and following the instructions. The link can be also accessed from the ISA website www.isa.unibo.it  

The application must be accompanied by the following documents, which shall be uploaded:

I. curriculum vitae

II. list of publications

III. at least one letter of reference up to a maximum of three from a senior academic with knowledge of the candidate and his/her curriculum vitae

IV. a letter of invitation and written reference from the supervisor of the research project proposed by the candidate at the University of Bologna.

8. The ISA Council of Resident Fellows will prepare a merit list of candidates to be published on the Institute website within two months of the call deadline. The selection results will also be communicated to the winners.

9. The successful candidates must officially accept the Fellowship within 15 days of the date of communication of the assignment; at the time of acceptance, all official certification of academic qualifications declared in the application must also be submitted. In the event of a successful candidate who is due to receive his or her Ph.D. title after the call deadline, the related certification must be sent as soon as it is available and in any case before the start of the Fellowship.

10. Fellows will be required to: a. carry out research activities according to the plan submitted in their application and approved by the Professor or Researcher at the University of Bologna who is acting as supervisor/tutor

b. give a lesson/lecture related to their research

c. deliver a progress report (by July 15) and a final report (by December 31) on their research activities; reports are to be signed by the supervisor

d. accredit the Istituto di Studi Avanzati in any publications produced during their research activities at the University of Bologna.

11. Entry and residence in Italy of the Fellows will be regulated in accordance with Italian law and the ordinances of the local authorities. The Institute will confer injury and third-party liability coverage (RCT). ISA will provide the necessary documents to the Fellow and his/her Unibo proposer, who will then complete the procedure required to obtain a Visa.

12. The tax regime of the fellowship is calculated as income from employment; subject to the tax legislation in force, pursuant to art. 47 letter c) of Presidential Decree 917/86.

13. The ESR Fellowship does not confer the right to social security or national health service coverage. ESR Fellows are required to take out appropriate medical, accident and civic liability insurance, as established by University regulations. The Fellowship is not an employment contract; its sole purpose is to promote the cultural development and scientific progress of the Fellow.

POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCH FELLOWSHIPS AT UNIVERSITY COLLEGE DUBLIN

The Irish Research Council has launched the 2015 round of its Government of Ireland Postdoctoral Fellowships for all subject areas. The closing date for applications is Thursday 27 November 2014. Applications must be made in conjunction with a suitably qualified Academic Mentor at an Irish Higher Education Institution or Research Performing Organisation.

The Government of Ireland Postdoctoral Fellowship Scheme provides funding across all disciplines for early-career researchers for periods of between one and two years. These Fellowships can be held for either: one year, in order to prepare a doctoral dissertation for publication through a variety of high quality published outputs e.g. monographs, peer-reviewed articles, edited volumes; or two years, in order to develop either a new research project or a research project that demonstrates a significant development of the subject of the doctorate through a variety of appropriate, feasible and clear published outputs.

These Fellowships are highly competitive and the UCD School of Classics will only support applications that have an excellent chance of success.

To be eligible to apply to the scheme, applicants must have been awarded their doctoral degree within the five-year period from 28th February 2010 to 28th February 2015 (see the terms and conditions for full details).

Applications will only be accepted through the electronic submission system, which will be launched on the IRC website in due course. All electronic applications must be submitted via the e-system following the relevant deadlines: 1. IRC POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIPS AT TRINITY COLLEGE DUBLIN

The Irish Research Council has launched its 2015 Government of Ireland Postdoctoral Fellowship Scheme, offering funding for 1- and 2-year postdoctoral research projects. For information, see http://research.ie/scheme/government-ireland-postdoctoral-fellowship-2015.

Ph.D. graduates interested in applying for an IRC Postdoctoral Fellowship through Trinity College Dublin should make contact with their intended Academic Mentor in the Department of Classics as soon as possible, keeping in mind that these applications require a significant amount of preparation and that internal vetting deadlines will fall before the IRC application deadline of 27th November 2014.

MARGO TYTUS VISITING  SCHOLARS  PROGRAM


The University of Cincinnati Classics Department is pleased to announce the Margo Tytus Visiting Scholars Program.  Tytus Fellows, in the fields of philology, history and archaeology  will ordinarily  be at least 5 years beyond receipt of the Ph. D. Apart from residence in Cincinnati during term, the only obligation of Tytus Fellows is to pursue their own research.   Fellowships are tenable  during the regular academic year (September to April).

There are two categories of Tytus Fellowships,  long-term and short-term.
Long Term Fellows will come to Cincinnati for a minimum of one semester and a maximum of two during the regular academic year.  They will receive  a monthly stipend of $1500 plus housing and a transportation allowance of $1500.
Short  Term Fellows will come to Cincinnati for a  minimum of one month and a maximum of two  months during the regular academic year.  They will also receive a monthly stipend of $1500 plus  housing  and a transportation allowance of $1500.
Both Long Term and Short  Term Fellows  will also receive office space and enjoy the use of the University of Cincinnati and Hebrew Union College Libraries.  While at Cincinnati Tytus Fellows will be free to pursue their own research.

Anchoring Innovation is the new research agenda of OIKOS, the National Research School in Classical Studies in the Netherlands. This agenda was developed with the financial support of Leiden University, Radboud University Nijmegen, University of Amsterdam and University of Groningen. It looks at innovation processes in various domains, including politics, religion, architecture, literature, linguistics and technology, in classical antiquity. The concept of “anchoring” refers to the many different ways in which people connect new developments and initiatives in these domains with the old, the familiar and traditional. Discourse-cohesion, intertextuality, memory studies, architectural transitions can be considered examples of ‘anchoring innovation’. To help us implement this research agenda we are currently looking for 4 PhD students and 4 postdocs:
