CIPSH 70TH ANNIVERSARY

We would like to make you aware of the fact that CIPSH, the International Council for Philosophy and Human Sciences, is currently celebrating its 70th anniversary. Please read the position paper distributed by its Secretary-General Luiz Oosterbeek: 

"Seven decades later

CIPSH, the International Council for the Philosophy and Human Sciences, was established seventy years ago, in the framework of the launching of the United Nations and of Unesco within them, as part of a strategy that should help preventing a new global terror.

CIPSH started as one more structure that was fostered by the core of partner nations, but with a past of its own and expecting its further growing autonomy, trying to prevent the agenda of research and knowledge from being governed by short term driven needs and results, which is still a major dimension today.

In the first general assembly of CIPSH, the 18^th January 1949, Jacques Rueff, president its preparatory commission, define the priorities for CIPSH at that time: campaign against non-reflexive specialization (“We wish to get the technicians away from their techniques”), encouragement of the setting up of international organizations in fields in which no such organizations exist, coordination of  bibliographical work and re-establishment of a world “community of minds.

The contextual constraints of the humanities today differ significantly from the 1950’s, but the crucial choices related to the pressure of short-term anxieties share similar traits, since societal constraints, culturally generated through time, are precisely the conditions of viability of humanities academic research. Disciplinary isolation, insufficient coordination of research in some fields, bibliographic dispersal, intellectual individualism,… these are contemporary problems that were also present seven decades ago.

However. the context pushes humans to, for the first time ever, face global unified challenges, living not only within one environmental system with integrated ecosystems as in the past, but also within a planetary socio-economic integration. The question is if humans will be able to build a coherent convergence of strategies to face a context that leaves no room for merely regional adaptations, while requiring reinforced diversity, designing a new modernisation which starts as one conceptual choice and proceeds as a sociocultural facing of dilemmas, involving values and meanings. Humanities have a major role in helping societies in this process.

The World Humanities Conference, organized by CIPSH and UNESCO in 2017, led to five main results: institutional (new members and fields of study), strategic (a first state of the art of the humanities), networking (with UNESCO, with other international councils, but moreover across CIPSH members), organic (through new structures, such as the new UNESCO and CIPSH Humanities chairs) and operational (through new programmes, namely the Global History of Humanity and the World Humanities Report). The new structure of CIPSH, assuming its confederative dimension, clearly reinforces the Council and its members, while debates need to be pursued, namely on how to move forward, within a dispersed context that reversed the trends issuing from the late 1940’s.

Today, the federations and unions are called upon to help CIPSH, as the Council is asked to contribute for Unesco and various international, regional and national institutions which experience severe difficulties themselves. The path undertaken since 2014 is leading to positive results, and CIPSH will certainly build from those, anchored in its member organisations and in close partnership with the other domains of research and with Unesco and society in general.

There is a need for a flexible framework of reference capable of federating research and outlining a convergent path. CIPSH has a major role to play in such process, which implies new administrative procedures, a new vision building collaborations with other sciences, the remobilization of its member organizations and a common joint program of action rooted in a clear methodology. The World Humanities Conference and the establishment of projects such as the Global History of Humanity or the World Humanities Report contribute to this but need to be complemented with further actions.

CIPSH, bringing together academies, world scholarly federations and unions, universities and the whole scope of humanities, may undertake this path, leading to resume the process of integrative knowledge through diversity, making full but critical use of digital possibilities, countering the current trend of disruptive ignorance of disciplinary corporative approaches and focusing on meaning and integrative epistemologies.

This is our common responsibility."

EUROPEAN FESTIVAL OF LATIN AND GREEK, LYON, FRANCE

We would like to let you know that, on 20-24 March 2019, Lyon will host the European Festival of Latin and Greek, themed "Iliade, Iliades" (sports games, theatre performances, expositions, interactive lectures, fashion shows, construction of Trojan Horses). The festival will include the reconstruction of a Mycenaean chariot and is not only aimed at students and scholars but at everyone interested in Graeco-Roman antiquity.

THESAURUS LINGUAE LATINAE SUMMER SCHOOL, MUNICH, 22 - 26 JULY 2019

We would like to forward to you an announcement issued by the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities, Munich:

"The Thesaurus linguae Latinae Institute announces its second Latin Lexicography Summer School, a one-week event in Munich, July 22 to 26, 2019. We invite participation by researchers at any stage in their career whose work involves the rigorous evaluation of Latin words in any aspect, ranging from their use in specific texts or their changing significance across the entire corpus of ancient Latin. In addition to philology, relevant disciplines include conceptual and intellectual history, epigraphy, linguistics, literary and textual criticism, medieval and Renaissance studies, philosophy, and theology. This year Professor James N. Adams will be present as a scholar in residence.


The program involves offers three types of activity. First, seminars and related exercises will address Latin lexicography, the methods and format of the TLL, and particularly challenging corpora (e.g. inscriptions, the vetus Latina Bible translation, ancient lexicography). Secondly, participants will collaborate in the production of a short lexicographic entry, which will be published in a forthcoming fascicle (lemma to be determined by the editors). Lastly, there will be daily time for participants’ own research in the Thesaurus Archive, supported by advice from researchers at the dictionary.

Unfortunately, the time for independent research is limited by other activities, and we encourage researchers with more extensive projects to arrive earlier, stay longer than a week, or plan a visit at another occasion, which is always welcome.


The Thesaurus linguae Latinae Institute is home to the world’s most comprehensive record of the Latin language (ca. 600 BC to AD 600), consisting of over ten million hand-written notecards, and a world-class library of editions, commentaries, and relevant reference material. Many of these texts have been annotated by former owners and specialists (e.g. Eduard Fraenkel, Wilhelm Heraeus, Friedrich Leo, Eduard Norden, Eduard Wölfflin). These texts also have systematic cross-references to recent discussions of individual words in scholarly journals and other publications. In addition, the Archive contains all the unpublished material for the TLL Onomasticon, consisting of all proper names and their derivatives (e.g. Homerus, palatium). The Bavarian Academy also houses the German Mittellateinisches Wörterbuch, with an extensive library of medieval texts, and is walking distance from the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek, which has an outstanding Latin manuscript collection, as well as the excellent libraries of the Institut für Klassische Philologie at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität and the Kommission für Alte Geschichte und Epigraphik at the Deutsches Archäologisches Institut.


Practicalities

The workshop begins at 9:30 am on July 22. Daily activities will typically run from 9:30 until 5pm over the course of the week, with some optional excursions. Participants are responsible for their own housing; occasional refreshments will be provided. The language of group instruction is English, but one-on-one support is available in several languages (Dutch, French, German, Italian, Spanish). A Certificate of Participation is available upon submission of a short report on your research findings, which will be stored in the Archive for future researchers to consult.


Application

Applications must be received by March 1 by email to summerschool@thesaurus.badw.de. Applications should include a curriculum vitae and a one- to two-page Statement of Benefit. The Statement should briefly describe one or more words that you plan to investigate (whether or not they have been published in the TLL), why they are important for your research, and what questions you hope to address during your stay. It is important to show familiarity with existing lexicographic resources. Given the limited time available for independent research, we encourage you to set modest goals and/or plan for a longer stay. Only fifteen participants can be accepted, and successful applicants will be notified by March 15.
