On another note, we would like to share with you a somewhat amusing article on the use of the Latin language on Twitter. Its focus is on Spanish football fans supporting their teams, Real Madrid and FC Barcelona, by posting Latin comments on social media. The article was published by the German website “bento” (http://www.bento.de/) that is part of the Der Spiegel-newspaper.

“The Department of Classics at the University of Cincinnati invites applications for a tenure track position at the level of Assistant Professor of Classics and Ancient History, to begin on August 15, 2016. Candidates are expected to be able to teach Ancient History at the undergraduate and graduate levels and Ancient Greek and Latin and Classical Civilization at the undergraduate level. A Ph.D. in Classics, History, or a related field by the time of the appointment is required. Tenure-track faculty are expected to make original contributions to knowledge through research and publication, to teach undergraduate and graduate courses, to advise and mentor undergraduate and graduate students, and to fulfill reasonable service obligations to the scholarly and local communities. POST DOCTORAL FELLOWSHIP AT THE “LASCARBX” CLUSTER OF EXCELLENCE

“Context

The LaScArBx Cluster brings together three laboratories of the Universities of Bordeaux working in the field of Archaeology (broadly defined), in order to implement a large collaborative research programme entitled “Using the world in ancient societies: processes and forms of appropriation of space”. Position profile

Applicants are expected to promote their own research project, which must be closely related to written/textual sources documenting either Antiquity or Middle Ages, in order to supply an original and significant contribution to the 3^rd Axis of the LaScArBx programme  ("Written Memory") as well as to the 1^rst Axis of AUSONIUS research topics ("Textual Corpora").

*Regarding Antiquity, we are looking for a specialist in one or more of the following disciplines : philology (production, transmission and reception of Greek and Latin texts; critical edition, Byzantine studies, etc.), epigraphy of the Greco-Roman world, papyrology (documentary and literary).

*Regarding Middle Ages, we are looking for a specialist of Medieval writing pratices (in particular as an expression and instrument of political power). Skills are required in codicology, palaeography, ancient languages (Latin, vernaculars and Medieval Arabic), edition of diplomatic sources, etc.

Requirements

This call is specifically addressed to recognized level researchers, of any nationality, holding a doctorate degree (in Ancient History, Classical Studies or Medieval Studies) delivered by a French University (except Bordeaux) or a non-French institution. Fellows should not hold or have previously held a research position in Bordeaux area.

A fluent knowledge of French and/or English is a pre‐requisite. The successful candidate will be highly motivated, creative, with demonstrated abilities to work in a collaborative environment.

Location, duration and appointments

Host Laboratory: UMR 5607 AUSONIUS (Bordeaux-Montaigne University, FRANCE)

The duration of the stay is of 18 months.

In addition to the salary (€32,360 gross per year), a travel allowance and research funds (€5,000 for the duration) will be provided.

NEW STUDY PROGRAMME AT THE UNIVERSITY OF STRASBOURG

We would like to inform you of the fact that the University of Strasbourg has introduced a new study programme enabling students to achieve a Diplôme d'Université "Mondes antiques et médiévaux. Langues Anciennes, Epigraphie, Papyrologie” (University Degree of Ancient and Medieval Worlds). The programme is the result of cooperation between the University´s Faculty of History, Faculty of Arts, and its Faculty of Protestant Theology.

DOCTORAL SCHOLARSHIP IN BERLIN

This week, we would like to let you know about a doctoral scholarship offered by the Berlin Graduate School of Ancient Studies. The scholarship is available from October 2016 for three or four years and will be funded by the DAAD (Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdiesnst - German Academic Exchange Service).
