WORKSHOP AT THE NORWEGIAN INSTITUTE IN ROME

We would like to forward to you the following announcement: 

"Art and Rhetoric in Roman Literature
Workshop for PhD students and postdoctoral scholars at the Norwegian Institute in Rome (1-3 October 2018).
The Department of Philosophy, Classics, History of Art and Ideas of the University of Oslo invites applications for a 3-day workshop on Art and Rhetoric in Roman Literature at the Norwegian Institute in Rome. The workshop explores interconnections between visual culture and rhetoric in Roman literature (broadly defined: we also welcome papers on Neo-Latin topics). Possible subjects include the many ways in which literature has shaped our memory of (extant or lost) artefacts, artworks, and architecturally crafted spaces; the semantics of monuments and architectural ornament; the interrelation between rhetoric, architecture, and imperial propaganda. We welcome all perspectives: philological, historical, and theoretical. Confirmed senior participants include Alexander Kirichenko (Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin),Bettina Reitz-Joosse (University of Groningen), Siri Sande (Norwegian Institute at Rome),Diana Spencer (University of Birmingham), and Tara Welsh (University of Kansas).
