AT THE INSTITUT FRANÇAIS D’ARCHEOLOGIE ORIENTALE OF CAIRO
FOR THE 2014-2015 ACADEMIC YEAR
 
 
The Institut français d’archéologie orientale (Ifao) of Cairo is a public institution of a scientific, cultural, and professional nature, working under the authority of the French Ministry of Higher Education and Research. It is headquartered in Cairo. Its area of research spans from prehistory to modern times.
In accordance with its statutes, specifically articles 19 to 22 of the decree nº 2011-164 of February 10, 2011 concerning French schools abroad, the Institute is recruiting scientific members for one-year positions, renewable up to three times. Upon recommendation by the scientific council, scientific members are appointed by the Institute’s director for one year. They will participate in the Ifao’s archaeological activities and research programmes.
For the 2014-2015 academic year, there are two openings for foreign members. Appointments will begin on September 1, 2014 and will last one year. They may be renewed one, two, or three consecutive times. Other foreigner members may be appointed upon referral by the admission committee and recommendation by the scientific council, provided that they are funded by their government or any other organisation in accordance with article 22 of decree nº 2011-164 of February 10, 2011 concerning French schools abroad.
 
Non-civil servant members receive the 1st pay grade of an associate professor (427 gross). Civil servant members whose pay grade in the metropole is higher than this aforementioned base pay receive pay equivalent to their original pay grade, without exceeding the gross index of 590. The latter will be on “provisional assignment” status.
Additionally, members receive a living stipend, and family allowances if applicable.
Article 9 of the Ifao’s rules and regulations specifies the application procedures:
Application requirements:
1. The applicant must either have a PhD;
2. or, possess a national diploma equal to or of higher standing than a PhD;
3. or, be a senior lecturer/associate professor (maître de conferences) or of equivalent position as per
article 6 of the aforementioned decree of January 16, 1992;
4. or, show proof of higher education or scientific titles or diplomas from foreign establishments,
deemed equivalent by the admission committee.
 
 
The candidate’s application must contain:
– A motivation letter;
– a CV including academic background, diplomas, publications, and accomplishments;
– one recommendation letter;
– a list of the applicant’s publications;
– a research project proposal related to the Ifao’s scientific programmes during the 2012-2016 fiveyear timeframe.
The application must also contain the following documents:
a) the admissions form (see sample layout in the annex);
b) For married candidates: a copy of their family record book; for candidates who are in a civil partnership we will need proof of this status;
c) copies of diplomas obtained; for holders of a PhD, please enclose a copy of your thesis, or, its preliminary report if not yet completed;
d) If the applicant has not yet defended their thesis, please enclose a certificate from your university and a recommendation letter from your thesis advisor;
e) For French candidates, please enclose a copy of the individual certificate of participation in the JAPD (journée d’appel de préparation à la défense).
 
 
The application must be submitted no later than June 6, 2014, at midnight. It must be
submitted electronically in the annonces / Postes & emplois section of the Ifao website.
